Daytona Beach - 1980

I can’t quite remember how I ended up in Daytona Beach, but I found myself there with a day to myself and no particular plans. I loved days like that—days where the cameras come out and you just explore. Sitting on the beach, baking in the sun, wasn’t on my agenda.

What caught my attention was the small community that overlooked this stretch of Florida coastline. Unlike the flashy hotels and condos of South Beach, this area felt worn and authentic. The motels had a weathered charm—they looked tired, yet lived-in. For those who called this place home year-round, it was likely their retirement dream come true.

The bright sunlight bounced off the buildings, pushing the colors to the forefront. It was one of those moments when the harsh overhead light, usually unforgiving, actually worked in my favor. It helped me capture a true portrait of this beachfront oasis, just as it was.
