I’ve always loved the beach, especially after the crowds are gone, when all you can hear is the sound of the waves. One late, overcast afternoon in September, I drove out to the west end of Jones Beach. The light had a silvery quality, with the sun attempting to break through. In the trash lay an empty bottle of Blue Nun, a once-popular and affordable drink of the time.
